India, with its diverse cultures and ancient recipes, has an abundance of cuisines that makes our mouth water and also give us nutrition with every mouthful. There is taste, health and comfort together in our traditional foods. Remember our moms’ favourite - Haldi-ka-doodh?

Almond Halwa

Almonds help keep the body warm and provide the necessary protein for the body to strengthen the bones. What’s works even better is when you soak them overnight and then eat the almonds. Badam halwa is a traditional Indian dessert that is made with milk, sugar, ghee and of course, almonds.

To prepare the halwa, soak the almonds overnight or for at least 4 hours. Next, peel and mix them with sugar, saffron, cardamom and milk. Make a paste and set it aside. Then on low flame and in 2 tablespoons of ghee, add the almond paste and keep stirring. As it starts to melt and blend, add some more ghee. You’ll know your halwa is ready when the mixture doesn’t stick to the pan. It should be neither sticky nor wet.

Carrot Halwa

The kids’ favourite throughout generations will always be Gajar-ka-Halwa in winters. The delicious carrot juice flowing into your mouth with a touch of sugar and nuts - bliss! This appetizing goodness is quite simple to make.

All you need are carrots, milk, sugar, cardamom powder, cashews and raisins. Grate the carrots and keep them for later. Then heat the pan and pour in some ghee with cashews and raisins and fry till they’re golden brown. Now add the grated carrots and mix till the raw smell leaves the carrots. Add milk and cook for a further 10-12 minutes or till the carrots are completely cooked. As the milk gets absorbed, add sugar and cardamom. This will liquefy and then thicken the mixture. You’ll know your halwa is ready when it doesn’t stick to the pan.

Turmeric Milk

Our moms’ favourite desi remedy for cold and cough - Haldi-ka-doodh. An extremely healthy drink to soothe your throat and keep your body warm during winters. Turmeric milk also improves immunity as it is rich in antioxidants and has various anti-inflammatory properties.

This simple recipe requires milk, turmeric powder, sugar and pepper. Mix them all and heat it over a low flame until it’s frothy. Then serve.

Masala Milk

Those who love milk often prefer masala milk over regular milk for it contains mixed nuts and spices that gives the milk a savoury taste. Masala milk isn’t just a winter drink but can also be had during the summers. It offers warmth and increases immunity for protection against infections.

Before you begin making masala milk, let the saffron absorb in milk and keep it aside. Also soak almonds, cashews and pistachios in warm water. Grind all the nuts and add milk to make a smooth paste. Then boil milk for 5 minutes on low flame and add cinnamon, cardamom and cloves. Remove the spices after 5 minutes, add the dipped saffron milk and mix well. Then add pepper, sugar and turmeric along with the nuts paste. Once it gets thick, take it off the flame and serve.


This Gujarati sweet dish is a must-have every winter. It is made of wheat and garnished with nuts.

To make lapsi, heat ghee in a pan and add a cinnamon stick, dalia (wheat), cloves and start roasting. Once the dalia has absorbed the ghee, continue stirring. Next, heat water till it boils. Once the dalia becomes light brown while stirring, add hot water to it and bring it to a boil. Heat it covered on a low flame till it cooks and becomes soft. If in case the water dries up while dalia is still uncooked, add some more water. Once it’s cooked and a little dry, add sugar and cardamom powder. Now turn off the flame, garnish your lapsi with almonds and cashews, and serve.
